5 Gallon Glass Carboy for Home Brewing The perfect sized carboy for your secondary fermentation.Glass carboys are rigid, airtight containers with typical capacities of 3-20 gallons. Because carboys are made of glass, they are non-porous and are easily sanitized, do not hold an odor and do not scratch easily, making it less likely that you will get bacteria in your homebrew. In brewing, a carboy is a glass or plastic vessel used in fermenting beverages such as wine, mead, and beer. Usually, carboys are fitted with a rubber stopper and a fermentation lock to prevent bacteria and oxygen from entering during the fermentation process. During the homebrewing process, a primary glass carboy can be used for fermentation. Once primary fermentation is complete, the beer is either transferred to a secondary glass carboy for conditioning or it can be transferred directly to bottles for conditioning. (This process of transferring is usually called racking.) If you have been making your own homebrew for a while now and fermenting in plastic buckets... its time to upgrade to glass carboys.
